Patang FAQs: Everything About Our Regional Indian Snacks

Patang FAQs: Everything About Our Regional Indian Snacks

About Patang

What is Patang?
Patang is a premium regional Indian snacks brand built around a simple idea: that India's best snacks are the ones made where they come from. Each Patang product is a specific regional namkeen or snack, made at its city of origin, following the traditional recipe, with clean ingredients and no palm oil. We are not a flavour company. We are a geography company that happens to make snacks.
What kind of snacks does Patang sell?
Patang's range covers 10 distinct regional Indian snacks: Kolhapuri Bhadang (spiced puffed rice from Kolhapur), Bambai Mixture (Mumbai-style namkeen), Calcutta Chanachur (Bengali namkeen mix), Puneri Bhakadwadi (Pune's iconic spiral snack), Bikaneri Jor Garam (Rajasthani spiced dal puffs), Dilli Gur Chana (jaggery-coated chickpeas from Delhi), Jaipuri Hing Chana (asafoetida chickpeas from Jaipur), Bengaluru Tapioca Chips, Sattur's Seeval (Tamil Nadu rice flour snack), and Thoothukudi Pepper Cashews. Each one is from a specific city. None of them are made in the same place.
What makes Patang different from regular namkeen brands?
Three things set Patang apart from mainstream namkeen brands. First, every snack is made at its origin, not in a central factory that approximates regional flavours. Second, we use no palm oil across the entire range, which is genuinely uncommon in Indian packaged snacks. Third, the ingredient lists are short and clean, no artificial flavours, no preservatives, no colours. Most Indian namkeen is designed for scale. Patang is designed for taste.
Is Patang a premium brand or an everyday snack brand?
Both, without apology. The ingredients and sourcing are premium, the oils are better, the recipes are traditional, and nothing is made in bulk on a continuous industrial line. But the snacks themselves are meant to be eaten regularly, not saved for special occasions. A bag of Kolhapuri Bhadang at 4pm with chai is not a luxury experience. It's what snacking at this quality level should feel like every day.
Which regions of India does Patang represent?
Patang currently spans seven cities across India: Mumbai (Bambai Mixture), Kolhapur (Bhadang), Pune (Bhakadwadi), Delhi (Gur Chana), Jaipur and Bikaner (Rajasthan), Kolkata (Chanachur), Bengaluru (Tapioca Chips), Sattur in Tamil Nadu (Seeval), and Thoothukudi on the Tamil Nadu coast (Pepper Cashews). The brand is pan-Indian in the most literal sense, not as a style claim, but as a sourcing reality.
Are Patang snacks available outside India?
We currently ship within India, with free shipping on orders above ₹350. International shipping is under evaluation. If you're based abroad and want to order, write to us at thepatangstory.com/pages/get-in-touch and we'll do our best to sort it out.
Has Patang won any awards?
Yes. Patang won the Premium Package Design Innovation Award in February 2026, recognition for the design philosophy behind our packaging, which is intended to reflect the craft and origin story of each snack rather than default to generic Indian food aesthetics.

Making & Manufacturing

Where are Patang snacks made?
Each Patang snack is made at the city it comes from. Kolhapuri Bhadang is made in Kolhapur. Calcutta Chanachur is made in Kolkata. Puneri Bhakadwadi is made in Pune. Bikaneri Jor Garam is made in Bikaner. And so on across all 10 SKUs. We do not use a single central factory. The geographic origin is not a marketing claim, it is a production decision. This is what "made at source" actually means.
Who makes Patang snacks?
Patang partners with specialist regional manufacturers, small-batch producers and artisan namkeen makers in each origin city who have been making these specific snacks for years, often decades. We source the expertise where it lives, not where it is easiest to manufacture at scale.
Are Patang snacks made in small batches?
Yes. All Patang snacks are made in small batches, production runs happen approximately every fortnight, which means the stock you receive is fresh, not sitting in a warehouse for months. Small-batch production also allows for better quality control at each step, which a continuous industrial frying line cannot replicate.
Are Patang snacks handmade or machine-made?
Most Patang snacks involve a combination of skilled manual processes and machines, the ratio depends on the product. Bhakadwadi, for instance, requires hand-rolling before frying. Seeval is pressed through a traditional mould. The goal is to preserve the texture and flavour characteristics of the traditional recipe, not to automate everything that can be automated. Where a machine does the job better, we use it. Where a hand does it better, we use a hand.
How does Patang maintain consistency if manufacturing is spread across cities?
Through fixed recipes, specified ingredient sources, batch-level quality checks, and regular maker visits. The manufacturing is regional; the quality standards are central. Each production run is checked before dispatch. This is more operationally demanding than centralised manufacturing, but it is the only way to keep the snacks tasting like where they come from.

Ingredients & Oils

Does Patang use palm oil?
No. This is one of the foundational decisions Patang was built around. Palm oil is the default frying medium in roughly 80% of Indian packaged snacks, it is cheap, shelf-stable, and extends product life significantly. It also deadens flavour and is nutritionally inferior to the oils that traditional Indian snack recipes were actually developed with. Every Patang product uses a better oil, sunflower, rice bran, or coconut, depending on the snack and its regional tradition. The exact oil used is declared on each pack.
What oils does Patang use instead of palm oil?
We use cold-pressed or refined sunflower oil, rice bran oil, or coconut oil depending on the product and its regional recipe. The specific oil is stated on the ingredient label of each pack. None of our products use palm oil, palmolein, or any palm-derived oil.
Does Patang use artificial flavours or colours?
No. Patang does not use artificial flavours, artificial colours, or synthetic taste enhancers in any product. The flavour in every Patang snack comes from real spices, real ingredients, and the cooking process, not from a flavour lab. This is not a marketing position. It is reflected in the ingredient list on every pack, which you are welcome to read and verify.
Does Patang use preservatives?
No. Patang uses zero preservatives across the entire range. The shelf life of our products, which ranges from 120 to 240 days depending on the SKU, is achieved entirely through process control, correct moisture management during production, and appropriate packaging. No synthetic preservatives are added at any stage.
Are Patang snacks clean-label?
Yes. Every Patang product follows a clean-label approach, short ingredient lists with recognisable, pronounceable ingredients. No E-numbers, no additive codes, no ingredient that requires a food science background to understand. If you pick up a pack and can identify every ingredient on the list, that is by design.
Do Patang snacks contain MSG or taste enhancers?
No. Patang does not use monosodium glutamate (MSG), hydrolysed vegetable protein, or any synthetic taste enhancer. The savoury depth in our snacks comes from real spices, quality salt, and proper cooking, not from flavour enhancers added to compensate for thin ingredient quality.
Are the spices in Patang snacks fresh or pre-mixed powder?
The spice mixes used in Patang snacks are prepared specifically for each recipe by our regional manufacturing partners, using whole or coarsely ground spices appropriate to that region's tradition. We do not use generic all-purpose masala blends. The Kolhapuri masala in the Bhadang, for instance, uses Kolhapuri red chilli, which is a specific regional variety with a different heat and flavour profile from generic chilli powder.

Diet & Nutrition

Are Patang snacks vegetarian?
Yes. Every Patang product is 100% vegetarian. No meat, no seafood, no animal-derived ingredients are used anywhere in the range.
Are Patang snacks vegan?
Yes. 9 out of 10 snacks are naturally vegan, no dairy, no eggs, no honey, no animal-derived ingredients of any kind. The entire range is suitable for vegan diets. Please check the ingredient panel on individual packs if you have concerns about specific ingredients or cross-contamination.
Are Patang snacks gluten-free?
Several Patang products are naturally gluten-free, including Bengaluru Tapioca Chips, Dilli Gur Chana, Jaipuri Hing Chana, Bikaneri Jor Garam, Kolhapuri Bhadang, and Thoothukudi Pepper Cashews. Products made with gram flour (besan) or rice flour are inherently wheat-free. However, if you have coeliac disease or severe gluten sensitivity, please review the ingredient panel on each pack for any cross-contamination declarations before consuming.
Are Patang snacks suitable for children?
Most Patang snacks are suitable for children, with the caveat that several are genuinely spicy. Kolhapuri Bhadang and Bikaneri Jor Garam in particular are made for adult palates. Milder options suitable for children include Dilli Gur Chana, Bengaluru Tapioca Chips, Thoothukudi Pepper Cashews (medium pepper heat), and Puneri Bhakadwadi. We do not use any artificial colours, preservatives, or flavours, which is a positive from a children's food perspective.
Are Patang snacks suitable for people with diabetes?
Most Patang savoury snacks are low in sugar and made from whole ingredients, chickpeas, nuts, rice, and spices, which are reasonable choices for most diets. Dilli Gur Chana contains jaggery, which is a natural sweetener with a lower glycemic index than refined sugar, but still contains sugars. We do not make medical claims. If you are managing blood sugar levels, please review the nutritional information on each pack and consult your doctor or dietitian before including any packaged snack in your regular diet.
Are Patang snacks suitable for Jain diets?
Some Patang products are suitable for Jain diets and some are not. Jaipuri Hing Chana contains asafoetida (hing), which is traditionally excluded from strict Jain dietary practice. Bambai Mixture may contain ingredients that vary. Bengaluru Tapioca Chips, Dilli Gur Chana, Thoothukudi Pepper Cashews, and Sattur's Seeval are likely more compatible, but please verify the ingredient label on each pack, as we do not formally certify products as Jain-approved.
How do Patang snacks compare nutritionally to street snacks?
Patang preserves the traditional flavour of street snacks while improving oil quality, hygiene, and ingredient consistency. The snacks are fried, we are not a low-fat brand and do not make health claims. What we offer is a better-made version of traditional Indian snacks: real spices, no artificial additives, and oils that are lighter and cleaner than the palm oil standard. For daily snacking, this is meaningfully better than most packaged alternatives in the same category.

Shelf Life & Storage New

What is the shelf life of Patang snacks?
Shelf life varies by product. Thoothukudi Pepper Cashews have the longest shelf life at 240 days. Bikaneri Jor Garam, Dilli Gur Chana, Jaipuri Hing Chana, and Sattur's Seeval last 180 days. Kolhapuri Bhadang and Puneri Bhakadwadi last 150 days. Bambai Mixture, Bengaluru Tapioca Chips, and Calcutta Chanachur have a 120-day shelf life. All dates are from the date of manufacture, printed on each pack.
How should I store Patang snacks?
Store all Patang snacks in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Do not refrigerate unless the pack is already opened and you are in a high-humidity environment. The biggest enemy of fried snacks is moisture, a pack left open in a humid kitchen will lose its crunch within hours. Keep sealed when not eating.
How long do Patang snacks stay fresh after opening?
Once opened, most Patang snacks are best consumed within 7–14 days for optimal texture and flavour. Products with puffed rice bases (Bhadang, Chanachur) are most sensitive to moisture after opening and should ideally be finished within a week. Cashews and chana-based products hold well for 2–3 weeks in a sealed container. The honest answer is that most packs do not last this long regardless.
Why does Patang have a shorter shelf life than supermarket namkeen?
Because we don't use palm oil or preservatives. Palm oil's high saturated fat content and chemical preservatives are the two primary tools mainstream snack brands use to achieve 6–9 month shelf lives. Patang achieves its shelf life through process control and packaging alone. A shorter shelf life is a feature, not a flaw, it means what you're eating is made more recently and without additives designed to extend storage.
Can I freeze Patang snacks to extend shelf life?
We do not recommend freezing. The temperature cycling when you take a pack in and out of the freezer introduces moisture condensation, which will soften the snack. The shelf life on Patang products is adequate for normal home consumption. If you have bulk stock, store in a sealed container in a cool pantry rather than the freezer.

For a first-time gift or a mixed gathering, the India in 4 Bites box is a strong all-rounder, four distinct regional snacks that give the recipient a genuine introduction to the range. For festival season orders, especially bulk corporate Diwali gifts, we recommend ordering at least 3–4 weeks in advance to ensure timely delivery. Products

What is Kolhapuri Bhadang and how spicy is it?
Kolhapuri Bhadang is a dry spiced puffed rice namkeen made in Kolhapur, Maharashtra. It is made with peanuts, dried coconut, and Kolhapuri red chilli masala, and is genuinely spicy. Kolhapur's food culture is known for its heat, and Bhadang reflects that honestly. It is not suitable for those who prefer mild snacks. If you enjoy spicy Indian food and want a real regional experience, this is one of the most distinctive snacks in the range.
What is Chanachur and how is it different from regular namkeen mix?
Chanachur is the Bengali name for spiced namkeen mix, a combination of thin sev, flattened rice (chivda), fried lentils, and peanuts. What distinguishes Kolkata's Chanachur from North Indian mixtures is its spice profile: tangy and tamarind-forward rather than primarily salty. It is made in Kolkata with the city's specific spice balance. It is excellent on its own and essential as an ingredient in jhalmuri (Bengali spiced puffed rice street food).
What is Sattur Seeval?
Sattur Seeval is a traditional South Indian fried snack from Sattur in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar district. It is made by pressing rice flour and gram flour dough through a fine-holed press to create thin noodle-like strands, which are fried crispy and seasoned with carom seed (ajwain) and salt. It is light, delicate, and very different from North Indian sev. Crumble it over curd rice, use it in bhel, or eat it straight from the pack with filter coffee.
Is the Puneri Bhakadwadi the same as Gujarati Bakarwadi?
They are related but not the same. The Puneri version (made in Pune, Maharashtra) is spicier, more tangy, and uses tamarind prominently in the filling. The Gujarati Bakarwadi tends to be sweeter and softer. Patang's Bhakadwadi is made in Pune and follows the Puneri recipe, it has a distinct chilli and tamarind edge that the Gujarati version does not.
Which Patang snack is mildest?
Dilli Gur Chana is the mildest, sweetened with jaggery, no chilli heat. Bengaluru Tapioca Chips are lightly salted with no spice. Thoothukudi Pepper Cashews have a moderate pepper warmth. Puneri Bhakadwadi has a layered sweet-spice balance that is complex but not hot. If you are spice-sensitive, start with Gur Chana or the Tapioca Chips.
Which Patang snack is spiciest?
Kolhapuri Bhadang is the spiciest snack in the range. Kolhapur's red chilli masala is not decorative. Bikaneri Jor Garam and Jaipuri Hing Chana are medium-high heat. Calcutta Chanachur and Bambai Mixture are medium heat with tangy and spice notes respectively. The spice level is stated honestly in each product description on the website.
